Rare Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print Kitagawa Utamaro 1 Heron Maiden

A beautiful old woodblock print from the Japanese Edo period in very good vintage condition and as seen in the pics ca. The original titled "Heron Maiden" [1790s] was painted by artist Kitagawa Utamaro 1 (1753 - 1806) originally published in the 1790s as part of the series "An Array of Dancing Girls of the Present Day". This type of print shows a woman of the pleasure quarters. The Edo period red-light districts were officially sanctioned, however, they weren't the playground for just anyone.

The popular top-class geishas of the day (known as'oiran') were depicted in this type of print of a close-up portrait view of the upper body known as an okubi-e (bust portrait). This wonderful woodblock reprint was published by the YuYudo publishing house which is regarded as one of the finest publishers in Japan. YuYudo publishers adhered to the same exacting standards of the 19th century publishers. They hired the finest woodblock artists and the reprints were done exactly as the original; an Artist carved a wood block, one for each color, and hand printed each print one color at a time with meticulous attention to detail and color choices. As seen in the pic the colors are still vibrant today. This is a meticulously detail woodblock print so Don't let this one get away!
