The print has not been examined out of the frame. Born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Nakamura Gakuryo studied traditional Tosa School painting under Kawabe Mitate. In 1912 he graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, and was for the first time accepted into the government exhibitions with the 6th Bunten.

In 1915 he was elected an Associate member of the Saiko Nihon Bijutsuin or Reformed Japan Fine Arts Academy, and thereafter exhibited frequently at the Inten. He became a member of the Kojikai circle concerned with establishing a new Japanese-style painting. From 1928 - 1930 Gakuryo was head of the Nihonga Department at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts.

In 1930 he participated in the formation of the Rikuchokai group. In 1935 he took a position as professor at the Tama Imperial Art School (Tama Teikoku Bijutsu Gakko) and exhibited at the Teiten. His first one-man show was mounted in 1939 at the Tokyo Mitsukoshi in Nihonbashi.

Long an exhibitor, he was appointed a judge for the Shin-Bunten in 1940. After the War in 1947 Gakuryo became a member of the Japan Arts Academy (Nihon Geijutsuin) and was named head judge of the Nitten. In 1950 he left the Inten after breaking relations with Yokoyama Taikan. His first retrospective show came in 1955 at the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, and in the same year he reconciled with Taikan. In 1962 he received the Order of Cultural Merit.

Gakuryo's work includes many original masterpieces and spans a wide range of subject matter, from figure painting to genre and landscape painting. This is a perfect statement piece to complement your modern home design.
